About Us
This was our greatest passion project yet! My mother and I had bought the house in 2021 after tremendously coming upon the house. I still to this day have a sense that the house chose us and not the other way around.
It was a balancing act as we decided to buy in Bulgaria as we had been living in Canada and the US for nearly 25 years. Although, my family comes from Bulgaria and while my mother can truly call Bulgaria her native country, I lack that sense of ownership as the entirety of my life was spent over seas.
Never the less that never stopped me from loving that which I knew as my homeland. Especially Baba's home cooking and the tomatoes! There is nothing like a juicy aromatic Bulgarian garden tomato!
When we came upon the house in Plovdiv Old Town, it was an unbelievable fit for us!
My mother and I are both designers and worked as such in Canada. The house was in need of some TLC and cultural preservation. We knew that the project would require a sense of balance between the old and new. It was vital that we maintained the historic relevance while also incorporating luxurious comfort and cultural richness. What was so exhilarating during the renovation process is it almost felt as if we got thrown back into the history of the home and old town. The discoveries were immense and fascinating and ones that we hope can be felt during your stay here with us at Elephant house.

During the 1960's, Plovdiv was home to a multitude of painters, actors, artists, and creatives. This was a period of great artistic revolution that bread names such as
Elephant House's roots run deep, intertwined with the legacy of one of Bulgaria's most celebrated artists, Georgi Bozhilov, affectionately known as 'The Elephant.' Born in 1935, Georgi Bozhilov left an indelible mark on the world of art. His working studio was right here within these walls. For decades, this house served as the birthplace of his artistic creations, where his imagination ran wild, and his brushstrokes brought canvas to life. His legacy lives on within these walls, where the spirit of 'The Elephant' is still palpable.
